Monday we went to the NEC in Birmingham for
the focus on imaging event. It was really interesting. They seemed to show a
lot of lighting there more than anything else which I didn’t really like. I was
really interested in some of the lenses they were selling. Especially the fish
eye lenses which I am considering buying. I was shocked at some of the prices
of some equipment. I didn’t like how there were so many people there trying to
show off there cameras when there wasn’t really anything good worth taking
pictures of. When we got back from Birmingham we had to upload the first part
of the we british assignment. I have decided on my final ideas for the second
part of this assignment and am going start shooting the test shots this
weekend. I am feeling confident about this assignment and feel I could have
some strong final images. We also made a magazine cover so we know what to do
when we have our final images. To be honest it was fairly easy and I was quite
proud of mine. The magazine I have decided to make a cover for is sidewalk
magazine which is a English skateboarding magazine which helps link in with my
work and I feel my images will look similar to the images which are in the
magazine. My aim is to show skateboarding as a urban sport (in the background)
within the UK which it is so one of my final images is going to be set in an
abandoned warehouse where I skate with my mates and capture a skater in mid air
using flash to light it up.

week reflection
This week we started our new assignment
which is called “we English”. The aim of this assignment is to show English
culture but without using the obvious pictures of the union jack. So I decided
to do skate photography and try to use landscape shots with skateboarders in
them. The Fujifilm assignment which we did last was a tough one. So many
problems kept happening like the weather kept putting off my photoshoots,
getting hold of the equipment as I don’t own my own film camera. I also didn’t
have many back up ideas for if the worse happened which it did. On this
assignment I have loads of ideas simply because I feel more confident using
digital and I feel like there is more freedom on what we shoot and how we shot
it. We have got to put together a magazine what already exists and put our
final images in it. For mine I have chosen three different ones, sidewalk
magazine, kingpin and thrasher magazine. I chose these three as they are all
skateboarding magazines but I will probably use sidewalk magazine as its an
English magazine. We also went through essay writing this week where we spoke
about how to describe and annotate our images in an essay which we are writing
very soon. In this assignment I have decided to experiment a little. I am go
try using filters on flashguns to add colour into it. Because I don’t own
filters I am going try and use sweet wrappers as they work pretty good. Im
feeling really confident on this assignment and think I will get a good grade. I
feel like I have a lot more time on this assignment.

reflection
This week we have been carrying on with our
powerpoints. I am feeling much better now about my work as the snow has cleared
up meaning I can finally shoot my final shoot on film. This assignment has had
ups and downs. The main problem was the wheather as it constantly moved my work
to later deadline. I feel that I have used a lot more detail in my work which
was my main faults in previous assignments. Generating ideas is something I
have focused on for abit. I like to generate my ideas by watching skate videos
or when out with friends. I tend to mind map so I don’t forget any of my ideas.
I like to look at my favourite photographers work to give me inspiration. My
main inspiration comes from Atiba Jefferson and Ed Templeton who are skate
photographers but they shoot many other subjects, which I like about them. I
think they will deffinently give me inspiration in future assignments. Finding
back up locations was a big problem for me as due to the snow I was trying to
find indoor locations so I could not worry about my final shoot. That didn’t go
so well as I couldn’t find somewhere where we wouldn’t get kicked out from. I
have tried all different ideas on different locations and have decided to use
200 ISO film instead of 800 ISO so I can use flash. We looked at what
photographers would still use film and I thought studio photographers,
landscape photographers and fashion photographers as they wouldn’t need to get
as many shots as a sports photographer wand might not need to rush to get them
shots sent off to a website or magazine. We also looked at wedding photography
which im not sure if I want to do this yet but we were talking about all of the
equipment you would need on location like 2x camera bodies, flashguns, sd
cards, tripods, camera bags, car. We also went omn to talk about the prices
some photographers charge for the day which I was shocked at as some can ask
for a few grand.

Week reflection
This week has been disrupted due to the
snow. On Monday I couldn’t get to college as the wheather was to bad and busses
weren’t running by my house. On Tuesday we mainly focused on location
photography. We were looking at equipment that different photographers would
use on a photoshoot. We looked at the different types of location photography
and looked at the different equipment each of them may use on a usual
photoshoot. We then went into Newcastle in small groups of two or three people.
The idea of this was to see how hard it is to shoot in the snow. I fount this
much harder than I thought. Because of how the light reflects off the snow this
affects the exposure. The camera would be under exposed most of the time so we
all played around with the shutter speeds, apertures and ISO to get different
results and see how the light affects the camera. I got about thirty shots all
together, quite a few of them were under or over exposed images but I wasn’t
going to delete them as I can use them in my assignment to show how lighting
can effect our final outcomes. I also went through my powerpoint and added in
five different location photography genres and explained what equipment each
photographer may take with them depending on the location. On Wednesday we just
looked at evidencing our work in more depth by evidencing some photographers
work. I was quite surprised on how much equipment some photographers actually
take with them.

Michael Clark
Micheal clark has some really amazing images. I want to try and capture images similar to the top one where a skater or bmx goes over me and i will use a fast shutter speed for a sharp image. I thought these images were inspirational as it links in with the fujifilm assignment which is based on colour film so i might try and recreate one like the top image. All of his images seemed to have been taken using fast shutter speeds of around 1/200 and apertures of around f15-f25.
Atiba Jefferson
Atiba Jefferson is my favourite photographer. He has inspired a number of my images. H shoots skateboarding, basketball and other extreme sports. He has a lot of strong images due to the colour within them. He also uses flash within most of his images and i think this helps bring out colour in his images. Ive started using flash in my images and find i get better results with it as i can isolate the object and its surroundings. Iv also noticed he uses fast shutter speeds of around 1/100 or faster within his images as they are all sharp and in focus.

First week back at college after christmas
This week we didn’t start back till the Tuesday
meaning we haven’t done as much as we usually would do on a normal week. On Tuesday
we were told about the new assignment which was called “The colour of” its an
assignment which has been set by Fujifilm. The assignment is based on using
colour film. Im looking forward to doing this more than the black and white one
as I feel there is more freedom to it which helps me out a lot. I started my
presentation where I had to do my introduction, three mindmaps of ideas or
equipment we can use. I then started doin my research on four different
photographers. I chose sports and landscape photographers as that’s my
favourite areas. I chose to research my favourite photographer Atiba Jefferson
who photographs skateboarding, basketball and other sports. His shots are
usually really detailed and he uses flashguns in almost all his images. I also
researched Adam burton who is a landscape photographer. His images were really
strong, he uses slow shutters to slow the water down and uses the light to get
different colours from it which looks amazing. I researched to other
photographers which were all really good. They all had really detailed and
sharp images. On Wednesday we looked at how we can annotate our or others
pictures much better. I now need to explain a picture using connotations,
denotations, composition, tonal range and many other techniques. I have also
learnt that I need to be more confident within my work.
